Perfect Game!

Sunday, Mothers Day, May 9, 2010.

Dallas Braden throws perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Only the 19th perfect game in baseball and I was fortunate to enjoy it in the company of many of my SABR friends. You will all read the stories and watch the replays of Dallas Braden’s game today, but there is no way that can capture the excitement and pure joy of being there AND it being my team.

Just amazing! Our Cubaball friend and El Jefe, Kit Krieger, was in town for the game. His seats were in the A’s family section, right behind Dallas’s grandmother and family! Other SABR folks (most of these folks sitting with Kit) at the game included Mark Macrae, John Moist, Alan, Steve Treder and his wife Pam, Liisa Lyon, Randy Hughes, Kenny, Ed Rimer and Jere Williams.

Thanks to all my SABR buddies who called or wrote about the game. Credit Sacramento SABR leader John Moist for photo.

Alexander Cartwright and author Monica Nucciarone

Written by Marlene Vogelsang

Monica Nucciarone, author of the recently published and Seymour Award nominated, “Alexander Cartwright”, visited the Bay Area recently and graciously met with about 20 Lefty O’Doul chapter members at a breakfast meeting.

She told the story of the research behind her book, including visits to Hawaii, to investigate Cartwright’s time spent there. An interesting side story commented on William Wheaton’s contributions to early baseball. Wheaton was a cofounder of the San Francisco California Society of Pioneers.

Pitchers and Catchers Report – 2/20/2010

Written by Lefty O’Doul Chapter

More than 20 SABR members gathered at the Society of California Pioneers in San Francisco to hear a presentation on Seals Stadium and early San Francisco baseball history by historian Angus MacFarlane. MacFarlane presented a fascinating glimpse of local history as he told the story of old Seals Stadium and the ballparks that came before it—Recreation Field and Ewing Field. He highlighted his research with old photographs and maps. MacFarlane discovered mention of a baseball game in the area as early as 1858, and even shared a line-up and box score from the game! SABR Director Paul Hirsch also shared details from the recent SABR board of directors meeting. He discussed the current membership drive (be sure to renew), the upcoming elections (be sure to vote), as well as the Donor Program and the conference in Atlanta.

Seals Tour of Japan Exhibit – 1/16/2010

Written by Lefty O’Doul Chapter

Twenty-five chapter members and friends gathered at the Society of California Pioneers to enjoy lunch and a private tour of the exhibit celebrating the 1949 San Francisco Seals’ tour of Japan. Mark Macrae explained the history of the tour and talked about how the exhibit came together. The exhibit includes rare footage compiled from old movies and memorabilia, ranging from players’ kimonos to Japanese baseball cards. A special fundraising raffle raised funds that would be donated to Conrado Marrero, the Cuban Washington Senators’ pitcher.

SABR Day in America – 1/20/2010

Written by Lefty O’Doul Chapter

Twenty members and guests from the Lefty O’Doul and Sacramento chapters convened at Armadillo Willy’s Restaurant in Dublin, Calif. to enjoy half-priced burgers and to celebrate SABR Day in America.

We discussed some recent research that members had completed, including biographies of Joe Pignatano, Ralph Branca and Ed Roebuck and further research on the Dodgers’ move to Los Angeles. Doug McWilliams of Berkeley shared his collection of Lee Sussman baseball cartoons, including game day scorecard covers for the Oakland Oaks and Oakland Athletics. McWilliams, a professional photographer who shot baseball cards for Topps among other clients during his career, also announced that his personal collection had been accepted for the archives of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Board member Paul Hirsch of Danville moderated a spirited trivia contest won by Mike Tormey of Alameda, with 24 out of 33 correct answers. Mike won the book Mathematician at the Ballpark and a box of Cracker Jack. Hirsch also shared recent board developments and answered member questions. Topics covered SABR’s financial state and 2010-2011 convention planning. For the last hour, we settled in to watch Game One of the 1979 NLCS on The MLB Network.

Pacific Coast League Exhibit – 10/3/2009

Written by Lefty O’Doul Chapter

The San Francisco Airport Aviation Museum was the venue for this meeting that featured a guided tour of the extraordinary exhibit of old Pacific Coast League team memorabilia. After lunch, the 30-plus attendees heard commentary from each of the team specialists. Alan O’Connor talked about the Sacramento Solons; Bill Swank provided a great description of the San Diego and Hollywood franchises; Ray Saraceni narrated the Seals; and Mark Macrae covered the remaining teams. Following the presentation, a splinter group of SABR members migrated to the Society of California Pioneers Museum for a private, pre-opening sneak peek of the O’Doul/Tour of Japan exhibit.

Attendees included SABR members Max Weder and his wife, Jennifer Ettinger, who were visiting San Francisco for the weekend from their Vancouver, BC home. They host the big summer gathering for SABR members in Vancouver. Jennifer is an internationally known sports artist with many works on display in the Vancouver area. Several O’Doul and Sacramento SABR chapter members rounded out the entourage. Special thanks goes out to Tim O’Brien of the SF Airport Museum and Tim Evans from the Society of California Pioneers for their assistance, generosity and support.

Pacific Coast League Reunion – 8/22/2009

Written by Lefty O’Doul Chapter

Many O’Doul chapter members attended the annual Pacific Coast League player reunion at the Oakland Museum. A morning of visiting with fans, historians, family members and collectors and an opportunity to chat with former players, including Charlie Silvera, Duane Pillette, Bill Renna, Cuno Barragan, Bud Watkins, Don Ferrarese, Mel Nunes, Billy Raimondi , Don Kornahrens, Lil Arnerich, Ernie Broglio, Rugger Ardizoia, Jim Moran, Lloyd Hittle, Tom Munoz, Fred Besana, Don Trower, Pete Mesa, Mel Duezabou and Elmer Orella. After a lunch in the lovely gardens, the afternoon sessions included a presentation of the 2009 PCL Hall of Fame plaque to the family of the late Frank Demaree. A fine presentation on Demaree’s life was made by SABR member Tom Crisp, who has studied Demaree’s career more closely than anyone. Demaree’s family attended from Santa Clara and Yolo counties and were delighted that so many people had nice things to say about Demaree, who died more than 50 years ago. Following this presentation, the floor was opened up to take questions from the audience. Several players participated in this session, sharing some very personal and interesting stories.

“Art of Baseball” Exhibit – 6/6/2009

Written by Lefty O’Doul Chapter

Our annual visit to the “Art of Baseball” exhibit at the George Krevsky Gallery in San Francisco was highlighted by art talks about the works. Seventeen members enjoyed Krevsky’s overview of this year’s exhibit. A favorite was an acrylic rendering of the familiar photo of Lefty O’Doul and four Japanese ballplayers. Lunch and a chapter meeting were held up the street at our favorite Lefty O’Doul’s Restaurant.

Pitchers and Catchers Report – 5/15/2009

Written by Lefty O’Doul Chapter

We celebrated Giants heritage with a special tour of AT&T Park. The tour took a closer look at the artifacts in the ballpark that honor the early days of Giants history. Tour leader Linda Vessa showed us pictures of early teams and talked about Christy Mathewson and John McGraw. After the tour, we video-conferenced with the Baseball Hall of Fame and saw jerseys and scrapbooks, bats and balls from the era. We were able to interact live with the HOF and enjoyed a lively Q&A session.
